A smash of brilliance from Gulls skipper Lee Mansell brightened up sixth placed Torquay United’s scrappy 1-0 home win over second from bottom Dagenham & Redbridge.
United boss Martin Ling said: “It was a great winner, it stood out as bright spot and Lee has now got nine goals now.”
Mansell thumped in the 40th minute winner from 20 yards after being teed up by left back Kevin Nicholson as the soaring Gulls made it four wins in a row to move .
Ling admitted: “The DVD of the game won’t be a best seller in the club shop but that’s another valuable three points.
“People have to understand that sometimes you have to win ugly and - if you are going to be successful - you have to win those type of games. It’s not always going to be pretty.
“It wasn’t a classic but we dug in and defensively we were solid all the way through. Mark Ellis and Chris Robertson did well again. We just didn’t get our passing going.
“We have been on the road for the last three games and produced some really good performances.
“Tonight wasn’t so good but the end but the outcome is the same: three points.”
Next up for United: Saturday v Northampton Town (Plainmoor, 1500)
Leesy does it: nine-goal Mansell (pinnacle)
