NATIONAL LEAGUE Torquay United FC 3 Gateshead FC 1

TUFC crestBrett Williams scored a superb stoppage time goal as Torquay United halted their three match losing streak with a fine sun-blessed 3-1 home win over Gateshead at bitterly cold Plainmoor.

Tireless Williams crowned a classic centre forward performance by latching on to an errant ball from defender James Bolton, racing towards goal and drilling a brilliant edge of the box shot past diving Heed keeper Dan Hanford and into the far corner.

On-loan AFC Wimbledon winger David Fitzpatrick fired Torquay into a 35th minute lead with an equally good far corner strike, after racing away from the halfway line.

Gateshead restored parity when Paddy McLaughlin swept home a second half penalty for a foul on substitute Luke Hannant by impressive new on-loan Forest Green central defender Aarran Racine, injured in the challenge.

Racine’s replacement, Paul Rooney – another loan signing (from Millwall) – made an immediate impression by restoring Torquay’s lead with a deft touch to greet Dan Sparkes’ free kick and beat Hanford.

Bright Sparkes made a match winning contribution, also setting lively Fitzpatrick on his way to goal.
