Against the run of play and on the counter MK Dons surprised their hosts when Aidan Nesbitt scored at the far post as the greens failed to clear a cross from the right.
Nesbitt hammered in past a defender and keeper Luke McCormick from close range.
You could have heard a pin drop in three sides of the ground.
Argyle target man Nadir Ciftci’s well-struck 23rd minute 25 yard central free kick crashed back off the face of the crossbar, with Dons keeper Lee Nicholls beaten.
David Fox's 32nd minute free kick was deflected just around the post but a minute later Argyle were reduced to 10 men when playmaker Graham Carey was red carded for a foul on Gboly Ariyibi.
Still Argyle went in search of an equaliser and it required a brave save by Nicholls to deny target man Ciftci as he was put in on goal by Ryan Edwards' pinpoint pass.
Tireless striker Joel Grant raced half the length of the field with the ball but his final shot was easily fielded by Johnson.
On the hour Edwards soared to head just wide from Jamie Ness’ deep free kick then Grant scooped the ball over when put in on goal by Fox’s astute pass.
Argyle pressed until the last with Gary Sawyer’s angled drive spectacularly headed just over by diving sub Alex Fletcher in front of the Devonport End.
