Adams urges Argyle to chase down Donny

Plymouth Argyle Football Club crestPlymouth Argyle boss Derek Adams will urge his newly promoted Pilgrims to try and catch League Two leaders Doncaster Rovers in the final three matches of the season.

Argyle clinched their first promotion in 13 years by sweeping to a 6-1 home win over relegation haunted Newport while Doncaster lost 1-0 at home to play-off chasing Blackpool on Easter Monday.

Post-match Adams said: “We want to enjoy this moment and winning promotion but results went our way and we must aim to close the three point gap on Doncaster. I am not saying we will catch them but we have three games to try.

“Today was always going to be a difficult match, we wanted the win for automatic promotion and Newport wanted a win to take them out of the bottom.

“We played in a manner that this football club likes and we have shown today that we can win at home and away.

“To get this football club back into League One was my priority when I joined the football club just under two years ago.

“We have had really successful times, a play-off final, a good FA Cup run this season and now a promotion.

“The players, the staff, the supporters, everyone at this football club wanted it and we’ve all delivered.

“There was a lot of pressure on us today and the players have dealt with it well. I thought the way we wanted to score goals was great. We went three for three with Newport and caused them trouble throughout.”

Argyle and Donny travel to play-off chasing rivals Colchester (Argyle) and Wycombe on Saturday.
