SAMMIE SWEEPS TO SOUTH WEST SUCCESS

Cornwall teenage amateur ace Sammie Giles swept to success in the English Women’s Golf Association South West Region girls championship at Lyme Regis Golf Club.
Giles, from St Mellion and already an established member of the women’s county team, carded two over par 148 over 36 holes to finish five shots ahead of runner-up Kyra Horlock from Wiltshire.
Gloucestershire champion Bethan Popel became the new EWGA South West women’s champion when she beat Cornwall champion Sarah-Jane Boyd in the final at Churston Golf Club last week.
In the semi-finals, 15-year-old Popel from Bristol club Long Ashton beat Melissa McMahon (Lyme Regis) while 19-year-old Boyd (Truro) beat Charlotte Dommett (Torquay).
Popel, who finished third at Lyme Regis, pipped 16-year-old Giles by one hole in the quarter-finals.
McMahon - now 19 - won the 2010 South West girls championship at Royal North Devon.
English Women’s Golf Association South West Region - Girls Championship (Lyme Regis): 148 – S Giles (St Mellion) 73, 75; 153 – K Horlock (Broadstone & Cumberwell Park); 154 – B Popel (Long Ashton).
EWGA South West Region - Women's Championship final: Popel beat Boyd 5&3.
Semi-finals: Popel bt McMahon 3&2, Boyd bt Dommett 4&2.
