Truro’s Sarah-Jane Boyd has started her Cornwall Ladies Golf Association amateur championship defence at West Cornwall Golf Club.
Boyd - who teed off at 0800 this morning - has won the coveted county championship three times, in 2007, 2009 and last year at Mullion when she beat St Enodoc’s Katie Rule in the final.
Rule, runner-up for the past two years, will be aiming to go one better this week in the championship's 105th year.
An impressive field has gathered at Lelant for today’s 36-hole qualifier including former champions Judith Ryder (West Cornwall), Sarah Sanderson (St Enodoc), Jan Sargeant (Perranporth), Rachael Phillips (Tehidy Park) and last summer’s semi-finalist Liz Bird (Newquay).
Ryder has won the competition six times, Sergeant, three, and Sanderson twice while Phillips was champion in 2005 and Bird in 2004.
St Mellion’s South West girls champion Sammie Giles – a semi-finalist at Mullion – heads a strong contingent of up-and-coming juniors, including Charlotte Brooke (Trevose) and Carlyon Bay trio Eugenie Knight, Abbi Maude and Emily Toy.
Play started today at 0800 with the start of the second round scheduled for 1300.
Matchplay rounds take place from tomorrow onwards until Friday's final.
