Cheltenham opened the new national Men’s Hockey League season with a 4-0 West Conference win over Team Bath Buccaneers at Balcarras.
James Astley (15mins) Alex Hay (23, 41pc) and Will Pearce (31pc) got Cheltenham off to a flying start against new-look Buccs, who topped the division last term but have had a summer turnover of players.
Cardiff & UWIC also scored four, beating newly promoted Firebrands 4-2 at WIS with goals from Tim Jones (13ps) Liam Brignull (16) Richard Howson (54) and Ben Croxall (62). Matt Blakeman (30) and Olly Pomphrey (69) replied.
Whitchurch player-coach Tyrone Moore scored their 45th minute leveller in a 1-1 draw at Fareham while new-look University of Exeter lost 3-1 at home to University of Birmingham despite Andrew Ross making it 2-1 on 50 minutes.
Somerset’s Premier penalty corner king Richard Mantell scored a hat-trick – all from set plays - as Reading won 7-3 at Hampstead & Westminster in the top flight.
