Cheltenham opened the new national Men’s Hockey League season with a 4-0 West Conference win over Team Bath Buccaneers at Balcarras.

James Astley (15mins) Alex Hay (23, 41pc) and Will Pearce (31pc) got Cheltenham off to a flying start against new-look Buccs, who topped the division last term but have had a summer turnover of players.

HAWKER SWOOPS TO SEAL WELSH DERBY

england hockey league logo Cardiff & UWIC warmed up for Sunday’s top of the table EHL Men’s Conference West clash by edging a 1-0 win over cross-city rivals Whitchurch at Sophia Gardens last night.

Luke Hawker’s eighth minute goal against the run of early play was all that separated Wales’ top two teams as Cardiff soared to second ahead of Sunday's home game against runaway leaders Team Bath Buccaneers (Welsh Institute of Sport, 1300).
