Els Mansell scored a hat-trick as Clifton made an eye-catching start to the new England Hockey League Women’s Premier Division season by beating defending champions Leicester 5-1 in Bristol.
Mansell took just two minutes to get off the mark and put Clifton 2-0 ahead at half-time with a 14th minute strike at Coombe Dingle.
Kim Hickin made it 2-1 in the 50th minute before Mansell claimed her third goal following a 62nd minute penalty corner. Joanna Leigh made it 4-1 three minutes later and Emily Kirkham completed Clifton’s five-star win a minute from time.
There were no goals as last season’s Women’s Conference West runners-up Isca University drew 0-0 with Southampton-based Trojans, third in the final table last term.
Across Exeter, Exe opened with a 3-0 home win over Team Bath Buccaneers and goals for Jackie Shute (9, F), Linda Webb (53, F) and Kirsty Cruden (57, PC).
Kathryn Bache scored a last minute penalty corner for Firebrands to secure a 3-3 start at newly promoted Gloucester City.
Corinne Bury’s 34th minute penalty corner conversion cancelled out Sophie Fynn’s ninth minute opener for Brands.
Sarah Jennings then scored twice to edge City ahead in the 40th and 65th minutes only for Bache to reply from penalty corners in the 52nd and 70th minutes.
Former Plymouth player Lauren Anning scored for Loughborough Students as they won 2-0 against Springfields in Women’s Conference North.
