There’s never quite been an end of season day like it in the men’s regional West of England & South Wales Hockey League.
Across the Davis Wood-sponsored league’s 24 divisions there are still 19 title/promotion and eight relegation issues to be resolved.
The league championship will be decided today but it couldn’t be much closer as the Premiership top trio – University of Exeter A, promotion-seeking Cardiff club Whitchurch and Cardiff & Met A – all start the day on 43 points.
League chairman Terry Cook has taken to twitter to justifiably dub the league’s down-to-wire final round as “super Saturday”.
Few would argue, especially any of the seven teams separated by just three points and vying for promotion from Conference South.
One of those is third placed Plympton Grammar Schools Old Boys.
PGSOB hockey club secretary Bruce Danbury – a club stalwart and former first team skipper – admits: “I don’t ever recall an end-of-season league day like this one, and certainly not one where seven teams from one division go into the final match with a chance of going up.
“It’s not unusual for one or two sides to be vying for promotion or the title and the outcome dependent on goal difference… but not seven!”
Today PGs face a short trip to Isca College, Exeter to play Devon rivals Ashmoor, another one of the Conference South super Saturday seven in with a chance of promotion. The match starts at 1300.

Truro have had a memorable season, having also won through to the last four of England Hockey’s national Men’s Trophy knockout competition.
However the Championship champions' champagne remains on ice... until later today.
• Today is also the last full day of fixtures for the West Clubs Women's Hockey League.
