SW HOCKEY round 16 Premiership preview

england hockey board boardWest of England & South Wales Hockey League leaders University of Bristol face their promotion examination today against second placed Firebrands.

Brands are poised to give the students their toughest test as only four points separate the Bristol sides ahead of their top of the table Premiership clash at Coombe Dingle (1100).

The students won the corresponding derby 3-1 at Failand in late October and will want to maintain an unbeaten home record of six wins and a draw.

Brands – who have national league experience on their side – will be buoyed by a three-match winning start to 2016 following wins over University of Exeter A (3-0) Team Bath Buccaneers A (7-2) and at Truro (3-1).

The Uni beat seventh placed Cardiff University 3-1 last time out at Coombe Dingle but were held to a 4-4 draw at resurgent basement side City of Bath last Saturday.

The third Bristol side in the promotion equation are Robinsons as third placed Cardiff & Met A cannot go up.

Fourth placed Robbies visit Bristol University in two weeks and Brands on the last Saturday of the season, March 12.

To maintain their outside chances of stepping up if the top two slip-up, Robbies must keep winning, including today at Truro (1330).
