WOMENS HOCKEY Only half time for excellent Exe

Exe Hockey logoExeter based Exe Ladies are halfway to maintaining their England Women's Hockey League status.

Exe beat West Herts 5-2 in Watford thanks to goals by Sarah Payne, Clare Whitworth, Emma Ross and Emily Mitchem’s second half double.

Exe – who finished ninth in EHL Women’s Conference West – trailed twice against their hosts, who finished ninth in Conference East.

Miranda Hall fired West Herts ahead after 11 minutes and although Payne’s 23rd minute penalty corner levelled the scores the hosts surged 2-1 up within two minutes through Anna Coppel’s goal from open play.

Exe ace Whitworth restored parity four minutes before half time.

All three of Exe’s second half goals came from penalty corner strikes with Mitchem’s 52nd and 68th minute finishes sandwiching Ross’s 54th minute conversion.

Exe now host Altrincham-based Timperley on Sunday at St Luke’s College in Exeter knowing another win would secure the club's coveted national league status.

Next Sunday’s game starts at 1400 and is free to see.
