WOMEN'S RUGBY West quartet in winning England XV

official Rugby Football Union logoEngland Women secured an impressive 17-8 win against world champions New Zealand in Aldershot, with tries from flanker Hannah Gallagher and centre Joanne Watmore and seven points from the boot of full back Emily Scarratt.

The victory, England’s second in four days against their southern hemisphere rivals, gives Gary Street’s side an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series ahead of Saturday’s final test at Twickenham Stadium.

England included Bristol Ladies Rugby team-mates, prop Sophie Hemming and 21-year-old centre Amber Reed, in last night’s starting XV.

Bristol back row forward Marlie Packer – from Yeovil - was introduced from the bench for Lichfield no 8 and England captain Sarah Hunter on 56 minutes and her turnover teed up Watmore for the victory-clinching try.

Gloucester-born centre Ceri Large replaced University of Exeter rugby sports scholar Reed on the hour.

Reed is a third year Sport and Excercise Science student at Exeter, where she has represented the university ladies first XV.

England led 10-5 at half time.
