PLYMOUTH ALBION Shanahan makes first signings

plymouth albion rugby football club crestNew Plymouth Albion head coach James Shanahan has made backs Pale Nonu and Ben Woods his first signings.

Nonu, 34, is brother of All Blacks ace Ma'a Nonu, plays in the centre and joins from Albion's RFU Championship rivals Rotherham Titans.

Pale Nonu is well known to Westcountry rugby fans having previously played for former Penzance club Mounts Bay and Launceston's Cornish All Blacks.

Nonu, whose wife is from Cornwall, was born in Wellington, New Zealand although both his parents come from Samoa. Six foot tall, he weighs 17 stones and can play either 12 or 13 preferring the inside berth.

Woods joins a growing band of Irishman at Brickfields as he is moving to Albion from Dublin club Old Belvedere.

The 23-year-old utility back has represented Leinster under 20s and Leinster A, and plays either centre or full back.

Shanahan said: "Pale Nonu and Ben Woods are two very exciting signings and with their physicality they will give us a lot of go forward next season.

"Nonu has played in the Championship for three seasons and that experience will good for a new-look Albion back line.

"Woods is very good over the ball, he has good footwork and his defence is excellent."

Albion anticipate announcing further new signings this week.
