ATHLETICS: HUNT SETS NEW SCHOOLS STANDARD

Dorset athlete Nick Hunt enjoyed a sensational, record-breaking 2012 South West Schools Combined Events Championships at Exeter Arena.

The annual regional championship - one of six across the country and attended by the national organiser - attracted more than 100 athletes with Porchester School's Hunt setting new standards.

The Junior Girls’ pentathlon competition was won by Ellen Barber (Somerset) beating Grace Redmond (Wiltshire) by a mere 5 points. This equates to a winning margin in one of the five disciplines of: 3 hundredths of second in the 80 metre hurdles or: 8 centimetres in the shot or: 2 centimetres in the long jump or: half a centimetre in the high jump or: less than half second in the 800 metres. The wining Junior Girls’ team was Cornwall.

The Intermediate Girls’ heptathlon was won by Emily Dixon (Wiltshire) with the team trophy going to Gloucestershire.

The Senior Girls’ heptathlon winner was Alice Vage (Cornwall); unfortunately no county fielded a complete team.

The Junior Boys’ individual pentathlon champion was Matt Trickey (Somerset) who was ably backed up by his team mates enabling Somerset to win the team trophy.

The Senior Boys’ decathlon saw overall champion James Taylor (Gloucestershire) only losing his lead briefly after the 110 metre hurdles with Somerset crowned team champions.

Pride of place must go to Southampton Athletic Club rising star Hunt, representing Dorset Schools in the Intermediate Boys octathlon.

Hunt's winning total of 5786 points was a championship best performance (beating the previous record by a staggering 318 points). Hunt’s points tally was also greater than the English Schools National Championship record and moreover a United Kingdom best performance.

Somerset gained the intermediate boys team championship.
