The Lotto Soudal sprinter headed home Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton SCOTT) and Fernand Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) alongside the River Usk at the end of the 175-kilometre leg.
With the opening day victory German Greipel sports both the OVO Energy Green Jersey and Wahoo Points Jersey heading into today's second stage in Devon.
Stage two starts at 1100 today in Devon, covering 174.9km between new town Cranbrook - near Exeter - and finishing this afternoon in Barnstaple on the North Devon coast, passing the holiday resorts of Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Saunton Sands in the closing stages. (Estimated finish time 1524)
Stage three starts (1100) and finishes in Bristol tomorrow - with all the ingredients to be a thriller: it’s a short, sharp, out-and-back leg into the North Somerset hills, including the Cheddar Gorge climb.
