As anticipated League One Bristol Rovers today confirmed Joey Barton as their new first team manager.

Barton, 38, takes over 19th placed Rovers ahead of tomorrow's home game against second from bottom Wigan Athletic (1900ko).

The former Fleetwood boss - and Burnley, QPR and Manchester City midfielder - has signed a deal with Rovers until 2023.

His former Fleetwood assistant Clint Hill - a team-mate from QPR days - will be Rovers assistant manager.
