Will Poole and Jamie Clare were in red hot form as Somerset’s super six scorched through to September’s English County Finals on sun-kissed home turf at Weston-super-Mare Golf Club.
Poole posted back to back 65s to finish 10 under and pip Sam Sloman to the South West amateur championship title by one shot.
Somerset trio Poole, Sloman and Thomas Plumb were neck and neck at the turn, topping the leader board on 65 after a windless first round over a Weston course in tip-top condition.
As the breeze picked up, so did the contest.
Poole – aided by a hole in one at the 194 yard par three 16th – returned another sunshine 65 and that was enough to edge just ahead of Sloman, who birdied 11 on his way to four under 66.
Two players landed eagles at 11.
Clare was first to ace the 199 yards during his morning 66. The Bristolian finished fifth overall on five under 135.
Tiverton 17 year old Bradley Scott also chipped in, watched by England Golf president John Williams, who also saw Poole sink an afternoon ace at 16.
Cornwall’s Harry Hall and Gloucestershire’s Dan Sheehan finished six under to claim third and fourth individually.
Hall pipped Sheehan on countback to retain the south west youths championship title he claimed in 2016 at St Enodoc.
There was only one team in it.
Justin Lane’s Somerset warmed up with two matchplay wins before hitting the fast forward button to speed away from their rivals and finish 15 under par and the only sextet to break par over the super course.
The reds now represent South West England at the national county finals further down the coast over the Cornish links of Trevose from September 29-October 1.
On this form they will take some stopping.
Now if we could just order some Somerset sunshine for late September…
