BOWLS Sophie Tolchard wins national title

Bowls England logoDevon’s international bowls star Sophie Tolchard has won the Bowls England Women's National Junior Singles Championship following a thrilling 21-20 final victory at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa today.

Tolchard (Kings Bowling Club, Torquay) beat fellow England international Jamie-Lea Winch following a brilliant last-end in front of an enraptured gallery.

Tolchard, 23, started the stronger, leading 10-5, however a run of seven consecutive ends in Winch's favour saw the home favourite take a 13-10 lead. The players were inseparable over the next few ends, until Winch took a 19-16 lead which was short-lived as Tolchard again drew level.

Winch then took a 20-19 lead and held game with a front toucher on the 27th end, however Tolchard reached into the head with her final bowl to take the jack into the ditch to secure the two shots required for victory.

Tolchard is no stranger to success having won a 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women's triples alongside Ellen Falkner and Sian Gordon.
