Cornwall beat Somerset at Taunton two years ago but a century from Ireland international Curtis
Campher, a short-term signing for the Metro Bank campaign, set up Somerset’s victory by 63 runs under the DLS Method in a rain-affected contest at Truro.
Buckinghamshire produced one of three upsets last season by beating Surrey at High Wycombe but this time they had to face Sussex at Hove and were beaten by 115 runs in a high-scoring contest.
Campher’s 107 at Truro came from 89 balls and with Joe Thomas making 78 Somerset piled up 323 for nine in their 47 overs after a delayed start.
There were two wickets apiece for Ben Elllis, Matt Lawrence and Callum Donnelly with Ellis dismissing opener Andy Umeed for a third ball duck then Lewis Goldsworthy, who has played for his home county Cornwall this season.
Campher then took the wickets of Will MacVicar and Xavie Clarke to help reduce Cornwall to 56 for four before captain Paul Smith and Max Tryfonos set to work rebuilding with a half-century partnership for the fifth wicket.
Cornwall were 110 for four after 22 when rain halted play when the DLS target total was 174.
At Hove James Coles, who began his senior county career with Oxfordshire, top-scored with 61 in Sussex’s 335 for nine in their full allocation of overs.
Coles struck three sixes and five fours in his 42 ball innings and there were also half-centuries for Tom Haines, Tom Alsop and Tom Clark for a full-strength Sussex team who face Durham in their opening Metro Bank Cup match on Friday.
Buckinghamshire captain Tom Hampton and slow left-armer Conner Haddow took three wickets with Haddow claiming the wickets of Coles and another Oxfordshire product, Harrison Ward.
Buckinghamshire’s batters were always going to face a tough assignment against an attack led by former England seamer Steven Finn who shared the new ball with Dorset’s Brad Currie.
Aadi Sharma took his opportunity to showcase his talent by making 46 from 62 balls before he was bowled by Currie.
Opener Ewan Cox struck two sixes in his 44 and Haddow enjoyed himself at the end by thumping 31 not out from 22 balls including two sixes in an over off Coles’s left-arm spin.
Off-spinner Jack Carson returned the day’s best figures of three for 46 as Buckinghamshire were dismissed in the 44th over.
