WHEELCHAIR FENCING Double World Cup gold for Gilliver

University of Bath-based wheelchair fencer Piers Gilliver made a successful return to competition after injury by winning double gold at the IWAS World Cup in Warsaw, Poland.

Paralympic, World and European Champion Gilliver hasn’t competed internationally since December but was quickly back to his best as he dominated the Category A epee, sealing the title with a 15-5 victory over China’s Saichun Zhong.

ANDREWS IS BRITISH YOUTH SILVER MEDALLIST

Plymouth fencer Tim Andrews finished runner-up in the boys under 14 epee at the British Youth Championships at Sheffield.

Fellow Plymouth Fencing Club member and Plymouth College student Georgina Barrington, from Holsworthy, finished third in the girls under 18 epee.

MCGEEVER 13TH IN EUROPEAN U23 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Devon-based teenager Jenny McGeever finished 13th in the women's epee event at the European Under 23 Fencing Championships at Gdansk, Poland.

McGeever beat Romanian Roxana Lazar 15-13 in the last 32 stage of the tableu before losing 15-11 to Russian Olga Kochneva, the eventual bronze medallist.

WELLINGTON SWORDS SUCCESS

Wellington Swords’ Chris Hay completed the rare feat of retaining the boys under 18 epee title at the British Youth Championships at The English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

 

It was a successful competition for the club as Chard’s Jessica Gundry also won a national title, claiming the girls under 14 epee gold medal in her first year competing in the age group.
