Sarcevic drove to the edge of the box and let fly with a thumping strike to seal victory against Steven Pressley’s United, who have now lost their last three league games.
Argyle – who took a first half lead through striker Joel Grant – are now unbeaten in four in the league, with two wins top and tailing two draws.
Grant scored in his third goal in three games when he slid in to send George Cooper’s pinpoint cross spinning over United keeper Adam Collin on 22 minutes.
After that Argyle dominated the first half without scoring again. Carlisle improved in the second half.
The Blues best opportunity to score came when towering central defender Byron Webster rose head and shoulders above the home defence to head Jack Bridge’s early second half corner cross on to the face of the bar, with home keeper Alex Palmer beaten.
Jack Iredale had a late opportunity to level for the Cumbrians but his angled shot on the run was saved by Palmer and soon after that Argyle countered to clinch victory.
