Leaders Falmouth extended their winning sequence this season to 15 games and at the same time ended Liskeard’s 13-match unbeaten record in an enthralling clash at mud-splattered Lux Park on Saturday.

Andrew Westgarth’s side recovered from a nightmare start, during which they conceded a goal, to bounce back in style with an equaliser before half-time and two more goals early in the second half.

The win moves Falmouth 10 points clear of Liskeard who, while having a game in hand, now have an uphill battle to catch them.

Despite the poor weather, a crowd of 318 turned out for a hugely watchable match on an old school mudbath of a pitch which had passed a morning inspection.

Liskeard immediately took the initiative and in the second minute they swept ahead with left winger James Rowe firing in from close range.

Falmouth were wobbling at the back in the opening 25 minutes and had goalkeeper Ryan Barnes to thank for them not falling further behind.

Nick Aplin had two gilt-edged chances but the striker screwed one effort inches wide and saw another blocked by the legs of Barnes.

James Lorenz’s presence on the right also had Falmouth struggling to contain him but again Barnes came to the visitors’ rescue to keep two efforts out.

Falmouth gradually worked their way into the game and from their first clear chance they equalised, with central defender James Ward left unmarked to head in a Dave Broglino corner eight minutes before half-time.

As the mud-splattered players made their way briskly to the dry of the dressing rooms, there was a strong sense that Liskeard could be punished for failing to take their chances.

And within 10 minutes of the restart the point was proved as Luke Barner put them ahead in the 49th minute before Dave Broglino curled in a superb free kick six minutes later.

Jack Bray Evans also struck the post with a low drive which beat keeper Luke Gwillam as Falmouth turned the screw.

Suddenly Liskeard found themselves cut adrift and a few heads dropped but that didn’t last long as the home side somehow dragged themselves off the floor.

They were awarded a penalty in the 68th minute when Barnes tripped Lorenz, who picked himself up to take the spot kick but was denied by Barnes’ brilliant stop.

Had that gone in it would have set up a thrilling last 20 minutes with Liskeard back in the ascendancy.

Instead Falmouth held firm and as the home side continued to push for a second goal and committed men forward, the visitors had chances to extend their lead before the end.

But goalkeeper Gwillam came into his own in the dying stages with a couple of brave and excellent saves.
