KJM SPORT REPORT Mousehole AFC 1 Millbrook AFC 2

Evidence of how far Millbrook have progressed as a Western League side after their inaugural season at this level came at Trungle Parc last night.

Goals from Tyler Love-Holmes and Sean Thomson saw Macca Brown’s team record arguably the result of the season so far against a team expected to make a strong title challenge.

And it was in stark contrast to their last Mousehole visit when they crashed 5-1 last season.

Millbrook have since lost star players in Tom Payne and Rikki Shepherd - but they appear to have replaced them well and last night’s result was their third win in four games which lifted them to fourth in the early season table.

Brown said: “It was a brilliant performance, everyone knows how tough it is to go away from home midweek, it takes huge commitment from the players and their families.

“You then throw Mousehole into the equation and it gets even harder because we can all acknowledge Jake (Ash) has built a superb team down there who it’s hard to take the ball from, so I was delighted with the win and I thought we were good value for it.

“The focus switched to Mousehole immediately after the Bitton game on Saturday, because our approach to games down here in my time has been really poor.

“Last season we were excellent in our game at Jenkins Park, but at Trungle we came down with 12 men and one supporter and I could see the lads were beaten before we even got changed.

“I made it clear to them that we won’t be accepting that last night, we had a squad of 16 and great travelling support and we were a different animal.

“I can’t remember the last time Mousehole lost a home league game and that’s for a very good reason. They show patience and composure, and then pass with such tempo and quality, so before you know it you’re on the edge of your box defending, feeling a little bit dizzy as they buzz around you, and to face that kind of football is unusual at this level.

“So you have to accept that you’re not going to have as much of the ball as normal, remain organised and work hard, but a plan is just words and counters on a tactics board.

“It always comes down to the execution of the plan and the players bought into it as always and got their rewards.”

Brown went on: “We started the game well, and then Tylor scored a fantastic header to put us ahead and then belief starts growing.

“I don’t think the wind particualry helped Mousehole first half, but equally it made it tough for us to counter attack so to get in 1-0 at half time was huge.

“We thought they may switch shape so prepared for that in the break and I thought we nullified it quite well, but when they score with 25 to go you then just hope the lads take a deep breath and manage the moment, and we reacted brilliantly.

“Knighty had a couple of great chances with a lob and one on one which he tried squaring before Thommo nicked the winner which was the touch of class which summed up his performance.

“It was a mistake by them, but he was sharp to it and showed great composure for his finish. His individual performance was magnificent and deserved a goal.

“Then in the latter stages we had to hold our breath a couple of times when time stands still for a split second and you just hope the ball rolls past the outside of the post.

“But that kind of thing went our way last night, helped by the incredible desire of the lads to win at all costs, and that is always a delight to see for a manager.”
