KJM SPORT REPORT Millbrook AFC 2 Keynsham Town 0

Western LeaguelogoYou have to go back to before Bonfire Night to find Millbrook’s last victory in the Western League premier division.

But the fireworks started early at Jenkins Park on Saturday as Sean Thomson broke the deadlock in Millbrook’s first attack after two minutes.
And when Jake Foster smashed home a rocket shot from Keiran O’Melia’s cross in the 28th minute, the Brook were on their way to their first league win since beating Helston 2-0 on November 1. Nine games ago.

It has been coming, to be fair. Last week Macca Brown’s side were unfortunate to lose 4-2 at Barnstaple after producing one of their best performances of the season.

Speaking after the win over Keynsham, Brown said: “We picked up where we left off last week, when we were superb for large periods of the game despite the defeat, and were sharp enough to take advantage of a bit of sloppiness to go ahead after just 90 seconds when Thommo showed great composure to round the keeper and finish.

“Keynsham to be fair grew into the game in those early stages. I was very complimentary about them in our reverse fixture when they deservedly beat us 2-1; I thought they were excellent but equally we were depleted and poor that day, but there is no doubt they are a very good technical side and that showed again on Saturday.

“The difference was us, we were ready and aggressive and when we are like that we are at our best. Foz again was excellent and he got the second after good work from Keiran on the left and that 2-0 cushion at half-time is gave us a foundation for the second half.

“Everyone knows it’s a dangerous scoreline as one goal can twist the momentum, and last week we essentially lost the game on set pieces, so the result wouldn’t care too much about just another good performance but the way we managed the second half was terrific.

“There were a couple of moments where a slip led to openings for Keynsham, one chance hit the post for them but we played some fantastic football at the other end in search of the third.

“When we were awarded a penalty with 20 minutes or so to go we had the chance to make our life a little bit easier but Thommo has clearly been watching too much of the Six Nations recently so we had to see the game out in a professional manner and that’s exactly what we did.”

Millbrook now prepare for the visit to Falmouth on Saturday and Brown said: “I’ve not been down there since the final day of the old Peninsula season before it split into East and West back in 2019, where I think we played out a 2-2 draw.

“So it’s a game we are really looking forward to because Falmouth have been fantastic since then, and have got to grips with this league really well after a tough start which i think we all knew they would.

“Westy (Andy Westgarth) has done a tremendous job down there, maybe when they lost Jack and Charlie a couple of months back onlookers may have thought they were in a bit of trouble, but that’s when you see what you’re made of and their reaction has been superb so fair play to them, we’ll need to be ready for that.”
