Manager Macca Brown didn’t mince his words after his Millbrook side misfired as a cold blast of winter blew across Jenkins Park on Saturday.
The Brook, who had won their previous two Western Premier games, lost to a fine Courtney Charles finish in the 55th minute as Welton made it 12 points in the last 15 and their third clean sheet in that run.
Brown said: “
In a word, it was dire. It was probably the worst game of football I’ve seen this season and their manager echoed that as well, and it’s probably up there with our poorest result, but that is one we just have to put in the bin very quickly and move on from.“We’ve done well in recent weeks, so it was a surprise, but I think we struggled with the type of game it was. It was scrappy and Welton were very ‘no nonsense’ and we didn’t take responsibility to get the ball down ourselves and play and got caught up in that. “Don’t get me wrong, we aren’t exactly Barcelona, but against Barnstaple a few weeks back we faced a very similar style albeit they were more direct than ‘no nonsense’, but we showed quality ourselves when we had the ball so we performed well, but yesterday there wasn’t any of that. “We also looked quite frustrated and petulant and that didn’t help us as you need that composure in games in order to show what quality you have. “We still had our chances, Knighty, Ed and Jake all had good chances but it didn’t really happen for us. “I don’t think we deserved to lose the game but I can’t complain too much because we always look at ourselves and we didn’t turn up so we can’t really expect any more than what we got. “We showed a bit more quality once we went 1-0 down, but there continued to be a frustration in our performance and everything seemed very rushed, and quality quickly evaporates then. I’m trying hard not to overthink it too much, we weren’t good enough but we’ve been decent recently so hopefully its a one off. “You have to give credit to Welton because they’ve kept a clean sheet away from home and nicked a goal, like we did last week against Falmouth but it’s a stark reminder of the other side of the coin for us, and we are very capable of flipping it either way, but you get that with young sides. “I can handle losing games as long as it’s on our terms and we give a performance and that was what was so disappointing on Saturday, so I am grateful we have an opportunity to bounce back at Saltash on Tuesday, because that’s exactly what you want after a performance like that and hopefully that’ll be the case.”
