Torquay United striker Billy Kee hit a hat trick for Northern Ireland in yesterday's European Under 21 Championship Qualifying Group Four 4-0 win over the Faroe Islands in Belfast at The Oval.
After a string of Northern Ireland Under 19 caps – and four goals – Kee, 20, had made just one appearance for the under 21s, a 90-minute run-out in a 2-0 defeat away to the Czech Republic in September 2009.
United – minus Kee – were knocked out of the Carling Cup first round 4-1 at Championship Southampton last night despite a 17th minute headed leveller by Gulls in-form skipper Lee Mansell.
Torquay’s League Two neighbours Plymouth Argyle – fielding the youngest senior team ever seen in green – were also beaten by Championship opposition.
Peter Reid’s young braves lost 1-0 to Millwall at Home Park although they nearly levelled late on when impressive 16-year-old substitute Matt LeCointe forced a super save from Lions’ keeper Steve Mildenhall.
One of Mildenhall’s former clubs, Yeovil Town were knocked out 2-0 at League One rivals Exeter City, where the Grecians’ Spanish striker Guillem Bauza marked his debut with the 63rd minute opening goal. Chris Shephard added a second in the 90th minute.
Cheltenham Town lost 4-1 at home to MK Dons despite taking and 29th minute lead through former Plymouth Argyle midfielder Luke Summerfield, his first competitive goal for the Robins.
Bristol Rovers' tie at home to Championship side Watford has been rescheduled for Tuesday August 23 (Memorial Ground, 1945) after being postponed on police advice.
