Schumacher upbeat despite EFL Cup defeat

Argyle boss Steven Schumacher admits last night's thrilling EFL Cup tie against Premier League Crystal Palace will give him a pleasant selection headache ahead of Saturday's home Championship game against Blackburn Rovers.

Despite a 4-2 defeat, an upbeat Schumacher said: "I hoped it would have a different outcome. We really enjoyed the whole night to be honest.

“It’s obviously gutting to go out and not get to the next round but I felt we played really well, we pushed a top team in Crystal Palace all the way.

“We showed in large parts of the game what we are capable of and just for a five-minute spell in the second half we got undone with three real brilliant moment of play from top quality players.

“It’s something for us to learn from but overall I am pleased with the performance but gutted to be out. They’ve got top quality players to find space and get their players the ball.

“And then we just switched off in and around our box.

“When Roy bought on Eze, Ayew and Schlupp I just felt that changed the momentum of the game and just for a second we switched off, lost concentration and we got punished."

Schumacher made nine changes to the side beaten 2-1 at Birmingham by another stoppage time winner in the Championship on Saturday.

“For us to compete tonight we needed fresh legs in there and as I always say with our squad we haven’t really got a starting XI we’ve got a squad, who I think are capable of flying because we can't afford to carry people. The lads who played tonight were brilliant and I probably have got a few selection headaches ahead of Saturday because I don't think there was a bad perormance from anyone. I know we made individual errors for their goals but overall I think everybody can be proud of their night's work and hopefully they learn from that experience of playing against top players as well. That's the thing  learning about the Championship and up against top Premier League opposition tonight is that you get punished for little small mistakes but we have just got to keep believing in what we are doing."

On Luke Cundle's 46th minute super strike, Schumacher purred: "It was a brilliant goal."
