Dorset’s Tom Robson is the new South Western Counties amateur golf champion.
Robson, 23 from Weymouth Golf Club, finished two shots ahead of Clevedon teenager Ali Balcombe following a four holes medal play-off after they completed 36 holes one under at Bristol & Clifton.
Both players had stand-out second rounds with Balcombe – the new South West Youth stroke play champion – scoring a best of the day 67.
Robson and third placed Nick Day from Henbury and Gloucestershire both carded afternoon 68s to match Jamie Amor’s morning target.
The Marlborough player topped the leader board at the halfway stage.
Somerset will represent the region in September’s England Golf county finals after finishing one shot ahead of Devon and two ahead of hosts Gloucestershire.
Justin Lane's side will now carry South West hopes of yet another win at the county finals in September following last year’s first ever victory for Cornwall, following successive Wiltshire wins. The finals take place at Wychwood from Sep 25-27.
