The Great Britain team for August's 3rd FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Lima, Peru, will include Plymouth Leander's rising young star Grant Halsall and Bath teenage swiming sensation Siobhan-Marie O'Connor.
The 18-strong squad announced by British Swimming also includes Amelia Maughan (Millfield/British Gas ITC Bath) as well as new senior national 200 metres individual medley champion O’Connor (TeamBath/Bath University).
The talented south west trio are now set to compete against the best swimmers aged 18 or under from around the globe. The selections were made at the British Gas Swimming Championships held in Manchester earlier this year.
British Swimming Development Coach Mark Perry said: “It is a great opportunity to give our younger swimmers the opportunity to step up a level and have the experience of competing in a big international competition.
“The team have a broad spectrum of experience, and this is an important stepping stone in all of their swimming careers”.
O’Connor won gold in the women’s 200m IM in 2:14.14 at this week's British Gas ASA National Championships in Sheffield.
After victory the 15-year-old admitted: “I haven’t rested for this meet so I’m stunned to have swam so fast.
“The aim was to swim well, not to make the World Championships team.
“I’m amazed to make the senior qualifying time. I’m due to swim in the European Juniors next month but will sit down with my coach now to discuss what will be the main focus this year. I’m just so shocked.”
The 2011 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships take place between August 16-21
