Clifton Ladies face the toughest end of year test when they travel to Investec Women’s Hockey League leaders Reading on Saturday in the final game before the midwinter, mid-season break.

Bridgwater-born brothers Richard and Simon Mantell are both included in Great Britain men’s hockey squad for next month’s Champions Trophy in New Zealand.

Promoted Gloucester City meet former West Clubs Women’s League rivals Isca University at Exeter today in the England Hockey League Women’s Conference West (12.30, University of Exeter Sports Park).
Unbeaten Isca secured second spot following a 4-1 win at Barnes Hounslow Ealing and two more goals for the division’s top scorer Claire Thomas while Gloucester will be boosted by their first league win, 3-2 over Swansea and goals for Emma Done (2) and Sarah Jennings.

South African international ace Ian Haley scored twice as University of Exeter got back on track in the England Hockey League Men’s Premier Division with a 4-2 win at Southgate.
Haley – who is set to be one of the Springboks stars at next summer’s Olympic Games in London – gave the students a flying start by opening the scoring at Southgate in the second minute.

Els Mansell scored a hat-trick as Clifton made an eye-catching start to the new England Hockey League Women’s Premier Division season by beating defending champions Leicester 5-1 in Bristol.
Mansell took just two minutes to get off the mark and put Clifton 2-0 ahead at half-time with a 14th minute strike at Coombe Dingle.

Newly promoted University of Exeter begin their England Hockey League Men’s Premier Division campaign with a huge home fixture, against Reading today (University Sports Park, 12.30).
Reading – who finished fourth in the EHL last term – could possibly call upon a handful of internationals, some of whom helped England claim bronze in the recent EuroHockey championships, including Somerset star Richard Mantell.
