Cornwall captain Paul Smith’s brilliant maiden century rescued his side against Cheshire at Chester Boughton Hall and set up a tense final day in the battle to avoid relegation from Western Division One of the Durant Cricket National Counties Championship.

Cornwall were deep in trouble and in danger of following on when they slipped to 198 for nine in response to Cheshire’s first innings 396.

The battle for the Western Division One title will go down to the wire after a day of cat-and-mouse championship cricket between leaders Berkshire and Oxfordshire at the Falkland club in Newbury.

Berkshire looked like enjoying a healthy first innings lead when they reduced Oxfordshire to 118 for seven but Tristan Rossouw led a bold fightback with 95 not out – his maiden half-century in the competition – with excellent support from Prav Chahal (36) and Tommy Rex (34 not out).

Cheshire captain Harry Dearden made his maiden century to rescue his side against Cornwall at Chester Boughton Hall and improve their hopes of avoiding relegation from Western Division Two.

Dearden’s Cheshire career has been split by a six-year stint with Leicestershire which meant that he was playing only his sixth match in the competition.

Northumberland and Shropshire opened their accounts in this season’s Durant Cricket National Counties Championship with respective ten wickets victories over Norfolk and Wiltshire.

Northumberland were the first winners in the third round of Championship matches, wrapping up victory at Jesmond in Eastern Division Two shortly after lunch on the second day.

Berkshire clinched the Western Division One title of the Durant Cricket National Counties Championship and a place in next month’s final by drawing their final divisional match against Oxfordshire at the Falkland club in Newbury.

A draw was all that Berkshire, who sit out next weekend’s final round of matches, needed to scupper Oxfordshire’s hopes of overtaking them and they comfortably achieved that by batting through the final day.

Cornwall seamer Will MacVicar returned the best bowling figures against Devon in 40 years on an eventful opening day of their Durant Cricket National Counties Championship Western Division One match Truro.

The Kent-based all-rounder took eight for 46 to dismiss Devon for 120 in their first innings in a day in which 22 wickets tumbled.
