NATIONAL COUNTIES CRICKET Day Two round-up

NCCA-Logo MasterDefending champions Berkshire were frustrated by rain, which delayed play in their Western Division One match against Wiltshire at Corsham until after lunch.

But they then made brisk progress with Tom Nugent taking the last three Wiltshire wickets to finish with six for 63.

Berkshire replied with an opening stand of 88 in 20 overs between Archie Carter and Savin Perera.

Carter departed before the close but Perera completed a fluent half century which included nine fours.

Nick Hammond made a polished maiden Championship century and shared a third wicket stand of 163 with debutant Henry Cullen for Herefordshire in their Western Division Two match against Devon at Brockhampton.

Hammond surpassed his previous competition best of 93 and was eventually dismissed for 114 as Herefordshire built a lead of exactly 100.

Worcestershire Academy prospect Cullen, 18, looked set for a century on debut, but fell for 84 when he hooked former Somerset and Kent seamer Calum Haggett to long leg.

The partnership between Hammond and Cullen was Herefordshire’s highest for the third wicket against Devon.

Matt Thompson just missed out on a century in his 50th Championship match in Devon’s first innings as he was left marooned on 90 not out while the last two wickets fell at the other end.

Thompson was batting again within six overs of the start of Devon’s second innings but this time he was dismissed for 22 by Matt Pardoe who also snared Elliot Hamilton for 44 just before the close. Devon will start the final day 22 in arrears with six wickets in hand.

Rain meant another truncated day at Pontarddulais where Cornwall opener Chris Gibson completed a half century on his county debut against Wales NC

But Cornwall were dismissed for 157 with off-spinner Tegid Phillips making short work of the tail to finish with four for 13 in only his second Championship match.

Only 17 minutes’ play was possible at Oxton where Cheshire increased their first innings total by ten runs without losing a wicket against Dorset

That was 17 minutes more than at Jesmond where Northumberland and Hertfordshire were washed out.
