NATIONAL COUNTIES Western Division day one round-up

NCCA-Logo MasterDefending champions Berkshire recovered from 22 for three to 301 all out against Dorset at Finchampstead in Western Division One.

Savin Perera, Euan Woods and Richard Morris all went cheaply to Dorset’s new ball pair of Brad Currie and Ben Fletcher.

But opener Archie Carter (64) and Dan Lincoln (59) led the recovery with a fourth wicket partnership of 98.

Andy Rishton (75 from 94 balls) then continued the good work with handy runs down the order from wicketkeeper Stewart Davison (35).

Seamer Lewis Sharp, making his Berkshire debut at his home club ground, then had Josh Digby LBW and former Hampshire batsman Oli Soames departed in similar fashion to Rishton as Dorset closed on 31 for two.

Former Glamorgan all-rounder Graham Wagg enjoyed himself on his return to Wales with a century that rescued Shropshire against Wales NC at Abergavenny in Western Division Two.

Wagg, who left Glamorgan at the end of last season, still lives in Wales but plays his club cricket for Biddestone in Wiltshire and is in his first season with Shropshire.

His 126, from 162 balls, lifted Shropshire from 159 for six to 300 all out against an attack that included his former Glamorgan team-mate, off-spinner Kieran Bull.

Wagg struck 15 fours and two sixes and added 76 for the seventh wicket with Sam Ellis (33).

Wales replied with an opening stand of 60 between Tom Bevan and Morgan Bevans before Bevan was bowled by Shropshire captain Sam Whitney from the last ball of the day.

Another former Glamorgan player, pace bowler Kazi Szymanski, continued his prolific start to his career with Devon by taking his second five wicket haul in a week - against Cornwall at Truro.

Szymanski followed up five for 26 on his Devon debut against Wales NC last week with five for 42 as Cornwall were dismissed for 206. Szymanski has now taken 13 wickets in three innings and has been invited for trials with Worcestershire.

Szymanski took four of the first five wickets to fall but from 97 for five at lunch, Cornwall rallied thanks to 49 from Matt Robins and a half century from Paul Smith.

After the early loss of Elliot Hamilton, Devon made a confident start to their reply with James Horler and Matt Thompson adding 106 for the second wicket.

Only 22.2 overs were bowled in the Western Division One match at the South Wilts club in Salisbury where Wiltshire’s top order struggled after they had opted to bat first against Oxfordshire.

Former Worcestershire, Somerset and Hampshire all-rounder Gareth Andrew and his new ball partner Alex Chapman took two wickets apiece to reduce Wiltshire to 22 for four.

They had reached 37 for four – with Chris Aubrey contributing 21 of those runs – when the rain arrived.
