COUNTIES CRICKET Cornwall promoted to top flight

Cornwall secured the NCCA Cluberly Western Division Two title and will replace Herefordshire in the top flight of the competition next season after a dramatic last day in the penultimate round of matches.

Cornwall beat Cheshire by ten wickets at Redruth and were confirmed as Second Division winners after Dorset lost by 41 runs to Shropshire at Whitchurch.

Herefordshire’s relegation came with a round of matches to play after they were beaten by 157 runs by Oxfordshire at Thame in a match they had been in control of at the half-way stage.

A career-best 173 not out from contracted Sussex batter Harrison Ward allowed Oxfordshire to declare on 492 for nine, five short of equalling their highest-ever Championship total.

Herefordshire were challenged to make 322 to secure a much-needed victory but they fell well short with only Henry Hardinges, who followed up his maiden century in the first innings with a composed 45, looking like denying Oxfordshire.

Cornwall’s promotion came after they were relegated 12 months ago having been beaten by Devon in the only match in a rain-ruined Western Division One to produce a positive result.

The victory over Cheshire was Cornwall’s third in a row and their second by ten wickets – they beat Shropshire by nine wickets in their opener – and they head to Wimborne to face Dorset on Sunday with an unassailable lead.

Cheshire were winkled out for 175 in their second innings by spinners Ellis Whiteford (four for 35) and Elliot Hooper (three for 40).

Cornwall needed seven for victory and they sent in Ben Ellis and Ryan Tonkin, their usual numbers ten and 11, as openers to complete the job in five balls.

Cornwall had to wait before they could celebrate promotion as an inexperienced Dorset side fought hard before going down to Shropshire.

A century on Championship debut from Ralph Dunne (102) and 87 in his first National Counties match from Jay Terry kept Dorset on course to chase a stiff target of 375 which would have been both their record fourth innings total and highest successful run chase.

Dunne and Terry shared a fourth wicket partnership of 148 which took Dorset more than halfway to their target. Dorset still required 111 when Dunne went LBW to Warwickshire slow left-armer Theo Wylie but Mo Abbas stretched Shropshire with a battling unbeaten half century before last man Henry Dunlop was run out.

Berkshire suffered only their third Championship defeat in 12 years as Wiltshire wrapped up an eight wickets win at Henley in Western Division One.

Off-spinner Joe King took the wicket of Berkshire’s last man Lewis Sharp to finish with five for 67 which left Wiltshire needing 79 to complete their first victory over their hosts since 2014.

They got home safely for the loss of openers Jack Mynott and Cyrus Shafi and, having gone into the match with First Division survival their main aim, Wiltshire now face a Western Division title decider against leaders Devon at the South Wilts club in Salisbury starting on Sunday.

Although Berkshire retain a mathematical chance of topping the division it would require rain in Salisbury and for them to beat Herefordshire at Eastnor with maximum points for them to do so.

Norfolk collapsed to 75 all out against Hertfordshire at Hertford, their lowest total in 26 years, to leave Lincolnshire in control of Eastern Division Two going into the final round of matches.

Norfolk needed to beat Hertfordshire in their last match of the season to have any chance of winning the division and they appeared well placed when they dismissed Hertfordshire for 179 in their second innings with seamer Andy Hanby taking six for 69.

That left Norfolk to chase 160 for victory but their innings quickly unravelled. Captain Sam Arthurton fell to the third ball of the innings to bag the first pair of his career in his 71st Championship match with debutant pace bowler Jake Wickham again claiming his prized scalp.

Hertfordshire captain Ben Waring then got to work with his left-arm spin to reduce Norfolk to 40 for eight from which there was no recovery despite some late defiance from Hamidullah Qadri. Hertfordshire’s win was their first in the Championship this season and only their third in all competitions.

Norfolk went top of Division Two despite their defeat but with just a six points lead over Lincolnshire who host Cumbria at Cleethorpes in the final round of matches starting on Sunday.

Lincolnshire will require a maximum of eight points to guarantee an immediate return to Eastern Division One next season although Cumbria kept alive their own promotion hopes by beating Bedfordshire by 37 runs at Netherfield.

It required a bit of contrivance between the captains to get there after rain had accounted for the equivalent of more than a day’s play on the first two days.

Cumbria used very occasional bowlers Ed Wade and Calum Rowe to feed Bedfordshire 72 runs in the first three over of the day which was followed by a declaration of their first innings and Cumbria’s forfeiture of their second innings.

The serious stuff began with Bedfordshire chasing 310 in a minimum of 97 overs for their first Championship win of the season and they made Cumbria work hard for their win.

Half centuries from Matt Taylor (88) and debutant Shaynan Patel (60) took the match deep into the final hour before Taylor fell to seamer Sam Sharp and Oscar Phillips went three balls later when he miscued a catch to Sharp off Michael Slack.

Suffolk went top of Eastern Division One after they beat Cambridgeshire by 35 runs in a tense East Anglia derby at Copdock.

A century from Darren Ironside, which got Suffolk to 263 in their second innings, proved decisive as no-one else reached 30.

Ben Claydon took five for 68 against his former county and Cambridgeshire were left to chase 239 for their first win of the season.

At 75 for one Cambridgeshire were favourites but that quickly became 88 for five with off-spinner Tom Harper going on to take six wickets to claim his first ten wicket match haul.

A second half century of the match from Callum Guest and 40 from Lee Thomason kept Cambridgeshire in the hunt but Harper wrapped up victory when James Sykes holed out to long-off.

Suffolk now head to Stafford on Sunday with a two points lead over Buckinghamshire who head to Peterborough to face Cambridgeshire who need to win to have any hope of avoiding relegation.

Staffordshire’s hopes of winning the Eastern Division and progressing to next month’s final were kept alive after they held on for a draw in a tense finish against Northumberland at South Northumberland.

Northumberland set Staffordshire a stiff target of 346 and appeared to be on course for victory when they had them 162 for eight with 45 overs of the day remaining.

But Matt Morris and teenage debutant Joe Thorne dug in for 29 overs in a ninth wicket stand of 99 before Morris went LBW to Oli McGee for 68.

That left Thorne and last man Tom Brett to survive 50 balls which they achieved with Thorne finishing unbeaten on 38 and Brett on 16.

Staffordshire now trail Suffolk by 13 points and Buckinghamshire by 11 with Northumberland, who have completed their Championship programme, assured of First Division cricket next year after a solid first season in the top flight.
