RAIN WASHES OUT Cornwall Cricket League weekend

It’s rare that not a ball is bowled on a full Cornwall Cricket League matchday but that was the case on Saturday with 53 cancellations due to the weather.

There was persistent rain from breakfast to early evening countywide and with grounds still struggling to recover from Storm Noa earlier in the week the entire programme was called off by lunchtime.

In what proved to be a wise move 15 venues opted to reschedule, with at least a week’s notice by mutual agreement, due to the amount of recent rainfall.

The four games planned for Sunday were also called off. The first 132 fixtures of the league season have seen only five played with 77 cancelled, 48 rescheduled and two conceded.

There was some good news on Sunday, however, as Wadebridge Cricket Club managed to get conditions playable for the NCCA T20 Cornwall v Wiltshire fixures.

Club volunteers worked tirelessly after the heavy rain had stopped on Saturday.

Their efforts looked to be in vain when a further downpour arrived at the Riverside on Sunday morning but thanks to the willingness of the umpires, and both teams, play got underway just before two o’clock.

Those efforts were rewarded when Cornwall won both games.
