Last season the brothers were team-mates when Berkshire were joint-winners of the National Counties Championship but Rhodri’s decision to join Wales during the winter means that they will be in the unusual position of playing against each other this weekend.
Rhodri, the elder of the Lewis brothers, is a student in Cardiff and has played regularly for Cardiff UCCE as well as for Glamorgan’s Second XI. Rhys, who has played for Middlesex’s second team, made his maiden century for Berkshire in last season’s Championship final against Staffordshire when he received a late call up after Rhodri dislocated a shoulder in a club match the day before.
Rhodri will captain Wales against his former county and will lead a much-changed side lacking any of their contracted Glamorgan players.
Batter Oskar Kolk returns to the side for the first time in four years and Saihaj Jaspal after an absence of two years. Cardiff UCCE seamer Asim Hameed is in line for his seasonal bow.
Berkshire have included debutant Samm Daniel, a former Wellington College slow left-armer, who now plays for Exeter University where he is captained by his Berkshire team-mate Johnny Connell.
In the other Group Three match Oxfordshire will break new ground by staging county cricket at Didcot for the first time with Buckinghamshire the visitors for the historic occasion.
Oxfordshire’s much-changed side, lacking any of their Sussex contingent, includes three debutants and another, Tahmid Ahmed, who will be making his competitive debut having played in the recent Showcase fixture against Surrey.
Oxford UCCE pair Ayush Patel and Amogh Karpe are joined by Gaarjuran Ganagabalan, a product of Berkshire’s pathway system but who played for Oxfordshire Under-18s last season.
Buckinghamshire have called up Amum Raykar for his T20 debut and seamer Tom Weymes to replace the unavailable Northamptonshire pair Aadi Sharma and Ben Taylor.
Devon face a make-or-break double-header against Dorset in Group Four at Sandford where, having lost three of their first four matches, they need at least one win to stay in contention for a place in the Super 12s.
Opening batter Sam Elstone returns having recovered from a shoulder injury and Somerset-registered pair Seb Linnitt and James Theedom are available. Theedom will be making his competitive debut having played for Devon against Somerset in the recent Showcase Match at Exmouth.
Slow left-armer George Addy returns after he missed last week’s matches against Wiltshire.
Dorset also make four changes with experienced batter Ed Ellis set for his first appearance of the season.
Wiltshire head to Werrington to face Cornwall who top the group having beaten Devon twice in their opening double-header day three weeks ago. Batter Nathan Feltham makes his seasonal debut for Wiltshire.
Seamer Dan Lello returns to Cornwall’s side for the first time in two years and Scott Kellow for his first T20 appearance since 2022.
Herefordshire’s Phil Mellish will make his Test debut when he scores at the second Test between England and India at Edgbaston next month.
Mellish, who combines his Herefordshire commitments with scoring for Worcestershire’s Second XI, will add his Test Match honour to being an official scorer at a One Day International between England and Pakistan at Lord’s four years ago.
