Torquay United manager Martin Ling hopes to name his assistant within the week.

The affable new Gulls boss made a sunshine start to his first Plainmoor press call yesterday as he outlined his immeidate priorities.

Both Ling, 44, and chairman Simon Baker were eager to emphasis the League Two club are in major transitional mode with redevelopment of the grandstand side of the ground due to start later this summer and the on-going redevelopment at the Gulls' Seale Hayne training base.

However it was the redevelopment of the United management structure and playing squad that was paramout to southwestsportsnews.

Chairman Baker said: "We are delighted to have Martin as our manager and we hope to name his assistant in the near future."

Baker confirmed Ling will be on a 12-month rolling contract, like his predecessor Paul Buckle.

As for Ling he admitted a priority was getting to grips with the Gulls squad for next season.

The new yellows boss said: "I have 14 players under contract and good young players but obviously we need to add to the squad.

"I will be offering new deals to Danny Stevens and Joe Oastler and we have to address the goalkeeping situation as  - at the moment - we don't have a keeper.

"There are a lot of decent players, including goalkeepers, out there without clubs.

"There's a good basis here, and I've got no doubt that we can build a good squad.

"We need six or seven players, and I need an assistant."

With regards to an assistant, Ling concluded: "Hopefully we should have an answer within the week, if not sooner."
