Torquay United boss Martin Ling admitted a draw was “probably a fair result” following the Gulls’ pulsating 2-2 League Two draw with Cheltenham Town at Plainmoor.
Ling said: “Overall the draw was probably a fair result if I am totally honest because they asked us an awful lot of questions.
“At 2-1 I thought we had three or four gilt edged chances that passed us by.
“Rene Howe hit the post, Billy Bodin and Lloyd Macklin both went close. I thought as a front three tonight those three were a real handful – and we always looked like we could ask them a lot of questions.
“There were definitely more positives than negatives to come out of tonight’s performance for us as far as I am concerned.”
United scored twice in a minute, through Aaron Downes (22) and Rene Howe (23) after Shaun Harrad’s 15th minute opener. All three goals were headed.
Howe hit the post and Cheltenham’s Steve Elliott’s effort was headed off the line by Gulls right back Joe Oastler before former Torquay striker Chris Zebroski levelled in the 80th minute.
Ling added: “At Fleetwood two of the four negatives were that we did not get enough crosses into the box and we were poor from set pieces.
“The players answered two of them tonight. Aaron score from Kevin Nicholson’s free kick and then Lee Mansell has put in a great cross for Rene to score.”
Robins boss Mark Yates said: “We had one cleared off the line and their keeper has made a great save in the second half.
“But we have also got to thank Scott Brown for a couple of saves when they have hit us on the break.
“I said to them after the game that if we went down 3-1 it was probably game over.
“We showed tremendous character, kept playing and I thought some performances were absolutely magnificent.
“At half time some of the lads were playing at 65 per cent of their capabilities. I think a few stepped it up in the second half, somewhere near their capacity.
“We are disappointed we haven’t won but we are also delighted we have got our first away point on the board.”
On target Chris Zebroski (pinnacle)
