John Sheridan praised his progressive, young Plymouth side for their flying start in a 3-1 FA Cup second round win over Welling United.
The Argyle boss said: “We asked for a good start and the result, and that’s what we got.
“We wanted to be in the third round draw, and we are, and that’s the exciting part, especially for the supporters.”
Plymouth flew into a 3-0 lead against the Wings after 21 minutes.
Argentinian midfielder Andres Gurrieri winged in with the first goal on 12 minutes following a mazy run, central defender Curtis Nelson doubled Plymouth’s lead from 12 yards in the 18th minute and forward Lewis Alessandra headed home Luke Young’s cross three minutes later.
Conference club Welling replied in the 53rd minute when target man Ross Lafayette pounced for his eighth goal of the term, following a slip by marker Neal Trotman before Argyle shut up shop.
Sheridan said: “It’s pleasing that we got the three goals.
“When it’s two you are always a bit worried but when you get three goals you have a good chance of winning, but obviously we never say that to the players.
“The important thing is that we started well, played well in the first 20-odd minutes and got our three goals. You have got to give the team credit for that, and the fact there were three different scorers.”
• Argyle are ball 58 in today’s third round draw which follows ITV 1 live coverage of Bristol City’s second round cup tie at Tamworth, Steve Cotterill’s first match in charge of the Robins (ko 1400). City/Tamworth's ball number is 63.
• John Ward's Bristol Rovers also go into the draw (ball 48) following yesterday's goalless draw at home to managerless Crawley Town, which means a Wednesday December 18 replay at Broadfield Stadium.
• Newport County were knocked out 4-2 at Conference high flyers Kidderminster while Salisbury City lost 4-1 at Port Vale on Friday.
• Cardiff City are ball number 11 in today's draw, Swansea City 38 and Yeovil Town 44.
