FA CUP 2R replay Plymouth Argyle 0 Bristol Rovers 1

FA CupManagerless Bristol Rovers secured a New Year FA Cup third round home tie against League One rivals Coventry City following a hard fought 1-0 replay win at League Two Plymouth Argyle

Rovers took the lead in fortuitous fashion as home defender Scott Wootton’s clearance looped up off Cam Hargreaves' back and fell invitingly for wing back Alex Rodman to powerfully head home on 68 minutes.

Rovers’ Finnish keeper Anssi Jaakkola clawed Josh Grant’s effort on the post on 57 minutes.

George Cooper's deflected shot was well saved by Jaakkola before rebounding to Dom Telford, who fired over.

Rovers responded through Rodman, whose rising shot from inside the box was turned around the post by Alex Palmer.

On the hour Tyler Smith cut in from the left and fired just wide.

Rodman scored with a superb header which looped over outstretched Palmer and in just under the bar.

Despite going a goal down Argyle still took the game to their high-flying League One visitors with Cooper going close with a shot from the left and Wootton having a stoppage time shot cleared off the goal-line by impressive central defender Rollin Menayese.

Argyle had far the better of the first half with Antoni Sarcevic and Joel Grant both going close, former Rovers full back Gary Sawyer seeing his goal-bound header brilliantly deflected over by diving defender Alfie Kilgour and Rovers no 1 Jaakkola going full stretch to keep out shots by Telford and Cooper.
