FA VASE St Blazey 2 Helston 2 then pens...

st blazey helston KJMHelston won a dramatic FA Vase penalty shootout 4-3 at St Blazey to book their place in today's second round draw.

After an enthralling weather-beating all-Cornwall first round tie ended 2-2, Blazey established a 3-1 penalty lead but missed their last two spot kicks as Helston converted their final three.

Blazey started the game strongly and swept ahead after 11 minutes as Dan Perryman headed in from a corner.

The goal sparked Helston to life and it took a superb save from Jordan Duffey to prevent Alex Wharton from equalising after 25 minutes.

For the rest of the half it was a case of Helston possession and St Blazey defending well as the home side’s slender lead was preserved.

The restart saw Helston on top again but there was a crucial moment in the 55th minute with a great chance for Blazey to double their lead.

Perryman ran on to a through ball along the right and advanced into the penalty area before unleashing a fierce shot which flew inches over the bar.

Nine minutes later Helston were level when a superb long ball from Olly Brokenshire deep inside his own half, caused panic in the Blazey defence and Matty Buchan nipped in to round keeper Duffey and roll the ball into an empty net.

Blazey restored their lead in the 73rd minute. Perryman did some great work along the right, holding off defenders and sprinting into the penalty area before laying the ball square for Jack Alexander to caress it into the net from 15 yards.

This brought noisy celebrations from home supporters but Helston took only two minutes to equalise, with Buchan rising high to meet Will Tinsley’s cross and plant his header wide of Duffey.

Four minutes from time Helston had a great opportunity to clinch the tie in normal time. Another stunning long range pass by Brokenshire, almost in his own penalty area, found Billy Tucker outpacing the Blazey defence but his goal-bound shot was deflected for a corner.

With no extra time in this season’s Vase ties, it was straight to the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

Perryman, Sam Cooper and Jack Tribble gave Blazey a perfect start while Helston’s first penalty, by former St Austell favourite Tinsley, was saved by Duffey.

Wharton scored Helston’s second spot kick but at 3-1 the home side were in the driving seat.

However, while Blazey’s Jordan Walton and Jake Miller saw their kicks saved by Borthwick, Brokenshire and Liam Tripcony scored to set up Tucker to slot in the winner at 4-3.
