FA VASE Shepherd inspires historic Millbrook win

Jenkins Park Rikki Shepherd warmed up the freezing crowd at Jenkins Park with a red hot performance as South West Peninsula East pace setters Millbrook progressed to the FA Vase second round for the first time.

The Brook are back at Jenkins Park next Saturday for a second round tie against Wessex Premier side Bashley from Hampshire.

Yesterday home supporters were rocked by a ninth minute goal from Sam Farthing which gave Sherborne a perfect start.

Those same fans were in full voice in the 26th minute when Shepherd carved open the visitors’ defence to score a magnificent equaliser.

Collecting possession on the left, the striker weaved his way past three Zebras defenders as he made his way into the penalty area, switched the ball to his right foot and smashed a stunning shot past helpless Sherborne keeper Jason Hutchings.

It was a goal fit for the occasion and Millbrook never looked back.

After a couple of near misses, the home side swept ahead in the 36th minute when Shepherd left his full back floundering along the right with his pace and he delivered a perfect low cross to the near post where Jake Foster provided the finishing touch.

And two minutes into the second half Foster was perfectly placed again to make it 3-1 from close range.

Shepherd came close to a carbon copy of his earlier goal in the 73rd minute as he again left several defenders in his wake but this time his goal-bound shot was blocked.

Sherborne put together a period of pressure in the late stages but they failed to test Millbrook keeper Chris Wearing, who was so well protected by his defence that this was one of his quieter afternoons.

Weather permitting, Cornwall will stage three second round FA Vase ties on Saturday.

As well as Millbrook v Bashley, the delayed Falmouth v Bishop's Cleeve has been rescheduled, while Helston host Fareham, who convincingly beat Bristol’s Roman Glass St George 4-1.
