KJM SPORT MATCH REPORT Dobwalls 1 Falmouth Town 4

SWPL logoLeaders Falmouth stretched their 100 per cent start to the season to eight games at Lantoom Park with a strong performance to see off determined Dobwalls.

The final score in the Westy-country derby was unkind on the home side because it was a much closer contest than 4-1 suggests.

But there was no denying that Andrew Westgarth’s title favourites deserved the points against Simon Westlake’s hard-working side.

The SWPL’s top scorer Luke Brabyn increased his season’s tally to 12 with two more goals and others came from Luke Barner and James Ward.

Dobwalls’ reply came from right wing back Kirk Smith.

Westgarth said: “It was touch and go for a bit in the early part of the second half but the subs made a big difference and it turned into a great away win.”

Westlake said: “We played our part in a good contest and shook Falmouth’s confidence but they showed a little more patience and deserved the three points.”

Falmouth made their intentions clear by pouring forward in the opening 20 minutes but a combination of luck, good defending and good keeping by Jordan Duffey denied them.

Just when Dobwalls thought they had weathered the storm Barner swept home a cross from the left and Falmouth had their breakthrough.

Dobwalls struggled to find any sort of rhythm, and indiscipline disrupted them further with three yellow cards before half-time.

Yet it was Falmouth who were briefly reduced to 10 men when full back Joe Thompson was sin-binned in the 44th minute for something he said to the referee.

Dobwalls put this advantage to good use as the second half started, with striker Kelvin Fyneboy going close to an equaliser twice in the opening five minutes.

But the home side were rewarded in the 53rd minute when Smith arrived at the far post to score after a good build-up and cross from the left.

Thompson returned to the field to level up the numbers but in the 58th minute Falmouth were indebted to Ryan Barnes for keeping them level on the scoresheet with a brilliant finger-tip save to deny Aaron Hulme.

So an hour gone and nothing to choose between the teams. Cue a double substitution by Falmouth, with Kirk Davies and Alex Wharton replacing Thompson and Tim Nixon.

The moves visibly lifted the visitors and 10 minutes later they restored their lead when Brabyn arrived like all good strikers do to poke a left wing cross home from close range.

Central defender James Ward then scored the killer goal in the 83rd minute after a corner from the left was only half cleared, and there was no way back for Dobwalls.

To rub salt into the home side’s wounds, Brabyn completed the scoring from the penalty spot four minutes into time added on after Nathan Lang was judged to have brought down the striker.
