KJM SPORT REPORT Buckland Athletic 3 Millbrook AFC 1

AN old boy standing outside the clubhouse at half-time told a friend: “I’ve a good mind to ask for my money back.”

“Yes, that’s the worst we have played this season,” his friend responded as these two Buckland die-hards talked through a first half which saw Millbrook lead 1-0.

The same two gentlemen were among the group at the end who cheered their players off the pitch after Buckland stormed back to win 3-1 and move up to second in the Western League Premier Division.

Football supporters eh? Fickle and fanatical, all within the space 90 minutes.

Experience of covering football for almost 50 years told me the game was far from over as a happy Millbrook trooped off at the break with the lead.

Rikki Shepherd’s seventh minute header, his 15th goal in all competitions this season, gave them a perfect start but the fact they failed to double or even treble their advantage in the opening 45 minutes came back to bite them on the backside.

As did Shepherd’s missed opportunity a minute into the second half after being played through. At this level, that sort of chance has to be taken.

So instead of being 2-0 ahead, it was 1-1 three minutes later as Josh Webber’s excellent left foot finish brought the home side alive.

And when Millbrook captain and talisman Tom Payne was shown a straight red for a late challenge on Ben Carter deep in the home penalty area after 56 minutes, the visitors’ task suddenly became much harder.

The home side stepped up the pressure and it eventually told in the 71st minute when the referee, way behind play in the centre circle, awarded Buckland a penalty as Ryan Tetley and Ryan Bush tangled.

Skipper Richard Groves stepped up to smash the spot kick past Chris Wearing, making his first appearance of the season after recovering from a broken leg sustained in a pre-season game against Liskeard.

The game was put to bed 11 minutes from time when Bush outpaced Dan Chapman along the left and smashed his shot past Wearing to make it 3-1.

Buckland could have had more goals – a spectacular scissors kick by Levi Landricombe and a volley from six yards by Bush which he smashed over come to mind – and in the end they were worthy winners.

But they knew they had been in a game against a Millbrook side who remain third from bottom.

Buckland assistant manager Danny Gaze said: “I said to the Millbrook manager (Mackenzie Brown) afterwards they are one of the best teams we’ve played twice this season.

“I’m not sure how they are where they are in the table, they play some great stuff. They’re a top club with lots of top players.”

Brown said: “We were happy to go in ahead, even though it should have been more as we created chances that should quite simply finish in the back of the net, no excuses.

“I was surprised by our start to the second half, it was so sloppy and we gifted them an equaliser, and then the red card made it increasingly difficult.

“In the last few weeks our poor discipline has cost us points in two games, I have no doubt about that.

“What happens in both boxes generally decides the result on any given day, and we only had ourselves to blame because in both areas we weren’t good enough.”
