Anybody expecting the Camels’ bubble to burst after an excellent start to the season might have a long wait.
They are now four points behind runaway leaders Falmouth Town and even though they have played two more games than Andy Westgarth’s excellent side, they look to be second on merit.
Perhaps the opposition on Wednesday wasn’t as strong as it could have been but, as the saying goes, you can only beat what’s put in front of you.
The game was all over as a contest before half-time with the home side five goals clear – it could have been more.
When Mark Gusterson made it 6-0 two minutes into the second half, you feared the worst for the G, but to their credit no heads went down and they might have scored a consolation in a vastly improved 45 minutes.
Camelford had started the game strongly and it was no surprise when they swept ahead after 12 minutes through Ed Harrison, his shot taking a deflection off a defender on the way into the net.
Four minutes later it was 2-0 and G keeper Ollie Paterson was left bemoaning his luck as Andy Boxall’s shot also appeared to strike a defender on the way past him.
Godolphin struggled to get over the halfway line as Camelford searched for more goals and they added three in five minutes before half-time.
Cam Patterson, who caused plenty of problems along the right wing all night, latched onto a through ball from Harrison and produced a perfect chip to extend the lead after 34 minutes as Paterson raced off his line.
Harrison, who had missed a couple of penalties in recent games, made no mistake from the spot to make it 4-0 in the 38th minute and Gusterson was on hand to convert Ryan Downing’s excellent cross from the left a minute later.
Gusterson fired in a close range shot from a corner to extend Camelford’s lead to 6-0 just after the break but it was to be their last goal of the night, even though they carved out many more chances.
Godolphin saw much more of the ball in the final half-hour and skipper Josh Pope came close to scoring on the hour with a low left foot shot which skimmed inches wide.
The Camels should have been in seven heaven when an excellent cross from the right by substitute Josh Caddy picked out Patterson unmarked six yards out but he volleyed over the bar on 87 minutes.
Camelford are back at Trefrew on Saturday when they face fourth-placed Wendron, while Godolphin have a weekend off to recover before taking on Dobwalls at Godolphin Way next Wednesday.
