KJM SPORT REPORT Newquay AFC 0 Liskeard Athletic 4

SWPL logoBEN Holter announced his arrival on the Liskeard scene with a hat-trick as the Blues – or yellows as they were on Saturday – cruised to an impressive three points at Mount Wise.

Holter, who joined the club on Friday on dual registration forms with Millbrook, is unlikely to put any of his strikes in his top 10 goals. They were all tap-ins.

But like any good striker, he was in the right place at the right time, and any hat-trick is to be treasured.

Max Gilbert put the icing on the cake with a fourth goal five minutes from time and the result moved Liskeard up to second in the table, still unbeaten after 13 games.

They are four points behind Falmouth Town and the meeting between the top two at Lux Park on December 4 will be one to see.

In terms of a warm-up for Saturday’s FA Vase tie against Keynsham at Lux Park, the match at Newquay was ideal. They were made to work hard but once they took the lead they never looked in danger.

That breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Holter finished off from six yards after Ben Collins’ shot had been parried out by goalkeeper Jack Heaton.

Holter thought he had scored again after 28 minutes, sending a powerful header past Heaton from Harry Bell’s free kick, but he was deemed to be offside.

He wasn’t to be denied for long. Gilbert’s shot from 25 yards hit a defender and spooned high into the air. When it came down, Collins’ shot was stopped by Heaton but Holter was there to touch the rebound over the line.

A minute later it could have been 3-0 when Collins unleashed a fierce shot but Heaton, an impressive young keeper, somehow turned the ball over the bar.

Liskeard extended their lead early in the second half when Nick Aplin’s pass across the six yard box was pounced on by Holter, who again finished with aplomb.

That turned out to be his last action of the match as he left the field to applause from the travelling supporters, to be replaced by another recent signing from Millbrook, Lee Robinson.

Liskeard then put together a 20-minute period of exhibition football when they should have added several more goals but more often than not tried to walk the ball into the net.

Quite how Jarrad Woods managed to fire over the bar from 10 yards when presented with an open goal in the 63rd minute only he will know. Collins, a constant threat along the left, also spurned a couple of chances.

Blues keeper Luke Gwillam, who had been a spectactor for more than an hour, showed there was nothing wrong with his levels of concentration as he stretched to somehow turn Dan Carne’s powerful effort over the bar.

Liskeard’s excellent afternoon was completed in the 85th minute when Gilbert sent a speculative but powerful shot from 35 yards towards goal; it proved too hot to handle for Heaton, with the ball squirming out of his grasp into the net.

Special mention for the Blues’ right wing back Harvey Mullis who, for the second successive Saturday, made an outstanding contribution.

Harvey is only 16 but there is no sign of nervousness in his performances. If he continues to progress, he will be a fantastic asset for Liskeard.
