Darren Way's exciting young greens were the better side in the first half but three decent chances failed to register a home goal while the Seagulls benefitted from the spot.

Argyle almost had the perfect start when Oscar Rutherford unleashed a blistering drive only for the ball to strike central defender Leigh Kavanagh and fly to safety.

Kavanagh almost turned villain as his slip let in striker Freddie Issaka but goalkeeper Tommy Reid saved his team-mate’s blushes by rushing off his line to block the shot.

Brighton's first real attack led to them taking a 23rd minute lead as Marcus Ifill burst into the area only to go tumbling under Lewis Moyle's challenge. Moyle almost atoned as he dived the right way but could not get to Samy Chouchane's well struck rising spot-kick.

On 34 minutes Jamal Salawu was hauled down from behind as he shaped to shoot home but the referee, quick to penalise Moyle, decided to ignore Argyle penalty appeals.

Good work down the right bye-line by Rutherford saw his cross find Issaka who shot wide of the far post.

Ifill almost gave the visitors the perfect start to the second half but his 25-yarder skimmed the top of the crossbar.

Ifill was not to be denied. In Brighton’s best move of the tie, he finished with a thumping angled drive which gave full stretch Moyle little chance as it flew in.

Argyle’s Welsh youth international Will Jenkins-Davies let fly from 20 yards forcing a good save from Reid before home skipper Angel Waruih’s effort smashed off the bar.

Argyle finally pulled a goal back five minutes from time as Brandon Pursall's header looped over Reid.

Seconds later the ball pinged off the framework of the goal and line but Brighton held on to progress.
