KJM SPORT REPORT St Blazey AFC 1 Godolphin Atlantic 2

SWPL logoST BLAZEY relinquished their six-match unbeaten Peninsula league run which stretched back to September 17 with a poor performance at Blaise Park.

They fell behind to a 14th minute strike by Godolphin skipper Josh Pope and although the ever Green & Black Liam Eddy equalised before half-time, the visitors had the final say.

Striker Gavin Perraton curled in a beauty from 25 yards in the 66th minute to secure third from bottom Godolphin’s fourth league win of the season.

To rub salt into Blazey’s wounds, Neil Slateford lifted an 80th minute penalty out of the ground.

Blazey boss Phil Lafferty is expecting a big response from his seventh placed side when they make the trip to second bottom Penzance on Saturday.

Lafferty said: “The players know that Saturday’s performance was nowhere near good enough.”

On a heavy pitch, Godolphin swept ahead with an excellent strike from Pope, who turned on the edge of the penalty area and fired a low drive past Jason Chapman.

Callum McGhee sparked a Blazey revival with a shot from 25 yards which crashed against the bar and they were level in the 37th minute when Eddy cut in from the right flank, switched the ball to his left foot and curled a superb shot around Godolphin keeper Dan Peters and into the net off the far post.

Slateford and Will Tinsley replaced Owen Rosevear and Callam Kenny at the start of the second half as Blazey tried to lift things.

But it was Godolphin who restored their lead after 66 minutes as Perraton, with a yard of space, curled his shot past Chapman.

As the game moved towards the last 10 minutes, Blazey decided to go to three at the back and push another player forward in the search for an equaliser.

Giles, the defender sacrificed despite a typically fully committed display, was not best pleased as he made his way off.

But the switch almost provided immediate dividends as Giles’ replacement, 16-year-old Rio Ward, earned a penalty with his first touch as he was tripped by Matt Sanders as he burst into the box.

Slateford summed up Blazey’s bad day at the office by launching his spot kick out of the ground.
