KJM SPORT REPORT Brown delight with Bristol ace Knight

Millbrook AFC LogoCharlie Knight – you would be excused for asking Charlie who? – proved to be Millbrook’s hero as he scored the late goal which bagged all three points for Macca Brown’s men and stretched their unbeaten league run to 12 matches.

This was Knight’s first appearance for the Brook and he made an immediate impact after coming on as a substitute in the 70th minute of their 3-2 Western Premier win at Ashton & Backwell United.

Knight, a former Cadbury Heath striker who is only able to make himself available for Millbrook games in the Bristol area, struck three minutes from time.

Twice Millbrook had been pegged back after taking the lead and it almost happened again in the last minute when it took a brilliant save from Chris Wearing to deny Ashton an equaliser.

The visitors made an excellent start with man of the match Josh Toulson heading home Jake Foster’s cross after 12 minutes but Ashton were level 10 minutes later through a Joe Bishop penalty.

That’s the way it stayed until midway through the second half when Toulson, playing up front in the absence of injured top scorer Rikki Shepherd, fired Millbrook into a 2-1 lead.

There was little time to celebrate before home side sub Jack Sell equalised two minutes later to set up a dramatic finish.

Millbrook manager Macca Brown said: “We signed Charlie before Christmas, he’s based in Bristol and is at Uni with Morcs (Sam Morcom), but he tore his hamstring so couldn’t feature for us in our run of December games up there.

“So it was brilliant for him to come on and get a goal on his debut as there’s no better way to introduce yourself to the lads than that!

“He’s a good player and he will be a good option for us for these away trips in February and beyond hopefully.”

Brown went on: “It was a fantastic result, Ashton & Blackwell are on a great run and have some big scalps in recent weeks, so we knew it was going to be tough.

“Couple that with difficult conditions, a few players missing, a tough midweek game two days ago and a long drive and it’s a bad football day in the making.

“But full credit to the lads, it was one of those games where you just had to find a way to win and that’s what we did. We’ve played really well in recent weeks and not won games and we knew it was all about the result this weekend.

“It wasn’t that pretty on the eye but we got the three points and kept our unbeaten league run going.

“You can’t underestimate how hard it is getting a result away from home in this league, it’s such a challenge. We’ve only lost four games out of 13 on the road, and only one out of five against Bristol based sides, which is a brilliant return and the lads deserve great credit for that because it really isn’t easy.

“It was a squad effort, JT (Josh Toulson) led the line really well, he was a handful for 90 minutes. He scored a couple of good goals and he should have had a couple more to be honest.

“Chris (Wearing) secured the three points for us with a brilliant save in the last minute, denying their number seven, who I must say was superb all game and gave us real problems.”

Millbrook: C Wearing, J Styring, R Tetley, J Wood, D Youldon, J Richards (S Thomson 70), J Foster (C Knight 70), J Toulson, T Payne, R Knight (C Mahoney 65), S Morcom.
